Sevilla vs Roma Europa League Final Match Stats Preview
Sevilla have reached the final of the UEFA Cup/Europa League for the seventh time, two more times than any other club. They have won the competition on each previous occasion they have reached the final (2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020).
Roma will contest the final of the UEFA Cup/Europa League for the second time, losing in the showpiece in 1991 against Internazionale. This is their fifth major European final overall, after 1961 (Fairs Cup), 1984 (European Cup), 1991 (UEFA Cup) and 2022 (Europa Conference League).
The only previous meeting between Sevilla and Roma in Europe saw the Spanish side win 2-0 in the last 16 of this competition in 2019-20, which was the last season in which Sevilla won the competition.
Sevilla have won six major European titles to date, with each one coming in the UEFA Cup/Europa League. Should they win their seventh title here, only five sides will have more major European trophies – Real Madrid (16), Barcelona (12), Milan (9), Liverpool (9) and Bayern Munich (8).
This game will be the 14th instance of a Spanish side facing an Italian side in the final of a major European competition, with the Spanish side being crowned champions on nine of the previous 13 occasions, including each of the last three in a row.
The final of a major European competition is being hosted in Hungary for the fourth time, and for the first time since 1985 – Leeds United vs Ferencvárosi TC in the Fairs Cup in 1968 (second leg), Newcastle United vs Újpest in the Fairs Cup in 1969 (second leg), and Real Madrid vs Fehérvár in the UEFA Cup in 1985.
Having won the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, Roma could win a major European title in consecutive seasons, which has been achieved by an Italian club on four previous occasions – Internazionale in 1964 and 1965, Milan in 1968 and 1969, Juventus in 1984 and 1985, and Milan again in 1989 and 1990.
The UEFA Cup/Europa League has been won by a Spanish manager on 12 previous occasions, more than the managers from any other nation, with six of the last 10 finals being won by Spanish managers. This will be Sevilla boss José Luis Mendilibar’s first major European final.
Roma manager José Mourinho has won five major European titles to date – UEFA Cup in 2003, UEFA Champions League in 2004 and 2010, UEFA Europa League in 2017 and UEFA Europa Conference League in 2022. Should Roma lift the trophy this season, Mourinho will be the most decorated manager in the history of major European competition, going clear of Giovanni Trapattoni (5).
Sevilla’s Jesús Navas will be 37 years and 191 days old on the day of this match, and could therefore be the oldest outfielder to start the final of the UEFA Cup/Europa League since David Weir for Rangers vs Zenit in 2008 (38 years and 4 days). Navas won the UEFA Cup in 2006 with Sevilla against Middlesbrough when he was 20 years and 170 days old.
